Sober up with this short interview of Michael Lewis. His book The Fifth Risk details some of the risks that we face now, but more importantly, risks each of us face in our own personal lives. We innately tend to choose “short-term pleasure and reward”, and turn a blind-eye to the consequences. This has consequences in our personal lives, and for the country as a whole. Namely, politicians and publicly held companies listen to their voters and shareholders. When the consequences finally arrive, we double down and seek scapegoats to blame rather than facing our own role in this dynamic.
When listening to this interview, notice how easy it is to blame someone (Trump and his team) rather than seeking to see a bigger picture that includes all of us. To his credit, Lewis notes that Trump is a symptom of the times, not the cause.
